Malas can be worn simply as an accessory, however they are traditionally used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra or the name or names of a deity. This sādhanā (practice) is known in Sanskrit as japa. Malas are typically made with 18, 27, 54 or 108 beads. In Tibetan Buddhism, malas of 108 beads are used. There are different methods of making malas, these malas are designed using sacred numerology. 108 is a sacred number originating in India. The turning of the beads represent that of the turning of the planets around the sun. Mathematicians of Vedic culture viewed 108 as a number of wholeness of existence. 108 connects the Sun, Moon and Earth - The average distance of the Sun & Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. There are also 108 pithas, or sacred sites throughout India. There are 108 Upanishads and 108 Marma or Acupuncture points in the body. So, as you can see 108 is important and these hand-crafted malas are made with love, intention + mantra. They can be custom made with different gems + stones.
